In short, certamen is a Latin quizzing game in which three teams from different schools compete to be the quickest at buzzing in and answering the question, which can be about Latin grammar, Roman life and culture, history of Rome, mythology, derivatives, and many other classics-related categories. Teams can from one to four players, and can compete in either Novice, Intermediate, or Upper Certamen.

Or, if that's too long for you, just check out the rules highlights (written in 2012): http://www.njcl.org/uploads/files/ConvContest/Certamen/2012RulesHighlights.pdf (These rules, both the long and short versions, were written for the national JCL, in which teams compete for their state, instead of for their school. So when it says, "Try to have fun and meet players from other states," simply substitute "schools" for "states". Also, in National Certamen, there is a semifinal round, which we do not have in the WA/BC JCL round.)
